교회, 자랄 수 없는

우리 중에 많은 사람들은 믿음 후에 삶 중에 일어나는 실제적인 회복을 믿지 않습니다. 그래서 우리 중에 다수는 적극적으로 지켜야 할 것들을 지키는 것으로 충분하다고 생각하기도 합니다. 어떤 사람은 끊임없이 사람의 죄된 속성에 대해서 아파하는 것만으로 믿음을 확인하기도 하고, 어떤 사람은 하나님의 사랑과 자비만을 강조합니다.
우리 인생에서 가끔은 사람을 움직이는 어떤 특별한 만남들이 있습니다. 만약에 사람이 하나님의 구원의 특별함을 알게 된다면, 인생은 하나님에 대한 경외와 감사가 있는 삶을 살게 됩니다. 복음은 서서히 분명하게 지금껏 알아왔고 지켜왔던 것과는 다른 것들로 사람의 삶을 채워갑니다.
하지만 어떤 사람들은 믿음을 말하면서도 한 번도 실제적인 믿음을 가진 적이 없는 것처럼 보이기도 합니다. 목사로서 수십 년 동안 믿음의 이야기를 하면서도 그들의 교회에서의 언어와 삶은 그다지 연결되어 있지 않습니다. 삶의 열매는 보이지 않는데 비어 있는 소리들은 여전히 가득합니다.
누가복음에 등장하는 시므온과 안나의 이야기는 그들의 기다림뿐 아니라 그들의 삶이 어떠했는지를 짐작할 수 있게 합니다. 사람이 구하고 소망하는 내용으로 삶은 방향지어지게 되어 있습니다. 
사람이 오래 신앙의 이름으로 세월을 보내면서도 오히려 더 악해질 수 있음을 받아들여야 하는 것 같습니다. 스스로를 속일 수 있을 만큼 사람의 악함은 한계가 없어 보입니다. 나이가 들어갈수록 오히려 눈물의 시편들을 기록하게 했던 왕의 마음도, 결국 밟지 못하게 된 약속의 땅을 먼 산에서서 바라보는 지도자의 눈길도 결국은 평생 함께 하신 하나님을 대하는 인생들의 이야기입니다. 

공의를 구하고 인자를 사랑하며 겸손히 하나님과 함께 행하는 것이 선하신 하나님이 원하시는 것입니다. 배신을 당해 악인에게 쫓기거나, 광야에서 열심으로 보낸 시간에 대한 보상이 없어도 여전히 살아 계신 하나님의 이야기에 기록되던 그들의 인생은 그것으로 충분했을 것 같습니다.

 

 

 

 

 

Many of us do not believe in the tangible restoration that happens in life after becoming a Christian. Because of this, some of us think it is enough to simply follow some rules. Some people confirm their faith merely by constantly grieving over the sinful nature of humanity, while others emphasize only God’s love and mercy.

 At times in our lives, there are special encounters that deeply change us. When a person comes to understand the uniqueness of God’s salvation, their life becomes one filled with reverence and gratitude toward God. The gospel gradually and clearly fills a person’s life with things different from what they had previously known and experienced.

 However, some people speak of faith as though they have never actually possessed it. Even after decades of preaching about faith, sometimes a pastor’s words and their life do not seem very connected. The fruits of life are invisible, yet empty sounds still fill the air.

 The story of Simeon and Anna in the Gospel of Luke allows us to glimpse not only their waiting but also what their lives must have been like. Because a person’s life becomes directed by what they seek and hope for.

 It seems we must accept that even someone who has spent many years under the name of faith can grow worse and become evil over time. The evil within a person appears boundless—enough to deceive oneself. The king who grew old and recorded psalms of tears, and the leader who stood on a distant mountain gazing at the Promised Land, Canaan, he could not enter—all of these reflect the lives of those who lived face-to-face with the God who was with them all their days.

 To act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with God—this is what the good Lord wants from us. Even when betrayed and pursued by the wicked, or when spending years in the wilderness without reward, their lives recorded in the story of the living God were, in themselves, enough.
